Why the months-and-days part is fiddly.
It sounds simple. It isn't, quite — here's the honest version.
Years, months and days aren't tidy
Months have different lengths and leap years get in the way, so “seven years and four months” can cover a range of days depending on which months they were. That's why the answer is given in years, months and days — the way a person would actually say it.
Total days is the precise one
The total-days figure counts every single day between the two dates, leap years included. If you need one exact number rather than a human-sounding one, use that.
A gentle tool on purpose
